"In the 1890s, a Brooklyn man suffering from cholera came to the Poconos and bedded down at the Swiftwater Inn to recover. There he met, fell in love with and married the innkeeper's daughter. He married well. His wife had inherited a large sum of money and some land across from the inn. The man, a physician, recovered. As a bacteriolologist, he used the land to open a lab, Pocono Biological Laboratories. That company formed the basis of one of the world's leading suppliers of drugs and vaccines, Sanofi Pasteur — an economic powerhouse in Monroe County."
